Note: Martin was listed as a 14 yo " with his father at his trade " in the Christian Brother schoold (CBS) rolls, showing and amission date of 15th may 1866. The same date as his his 10 year old brother William. Martin was still running the family butcher business in Bridge street , Westport in Januray 1894 when his own 9 year old son Patrick was recorded in the same CBS rolls with his father as a Butcher. His sisters Elizabeth and Beatrice related to family (
Shinners of Kentucky) that Martin was a "cattle Jobber" who bought cattle from the locals and took them to Liverpool for sale. In one of those sales she recalled the money was stolen and as a result Martin lost the ability to speak for months but was
miraculously cured at the Blessed Mother's Shrine at Knock.
The story went on that while martin was pursuing cattle sales his wife Mary and her mother ( or his mother) referred to as "littel Grandma" ran the Butcher shop which supplied mercahnt ships and their Crew with supplies inclusing beverages.
An old story related to descendant Betty Shinners ( Ed's sister ) was that Martin and his wife made a trip to Australia and while away "the baby died " , this could be last born Martin John.
Martin and son edward and daughter elizabeth arrived in the USA onboard the vessel 'CELTIC" on the 31st May 1908. They had already been preceded by wife Mary Anne along daughters Mary agnes and Beatrice who had arrived on May 2, 1908. Both parties had
given their arrival destination as 67th street , New York.
The birthdate on Martins D/cert says 9th Nov 1863 which differs from the Westport church
records in both date and by 13 years ?
