He was 56 years old giving birth 1837 + - 1 Alan Homes wrote in October 2005 - Robert Owen HAYDEN (1836-1893) was a Deputy Surgeon Major in the army and served in the Indian Mutiny 1858 and was at the battle of the Taku Forts in the China War of 1860. From: "Audrey" <Audrang@southcom.com.au> Subject: Snippets from Bombay Times Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2005 20 May 1858 Cape of Good Hope An Indian Hero, Capt Travers R A (who obtained a leave of absence ) and gallantly volunteered for service in India immediately after the news of the Indian Mutinies was received here, returned to the Cape in the Clipper ship Lightning, on Saturday last, Capt Travers was engaged in the action which successfully ended in the relief of Lucknow. On that occasion his horse was shot under him and he received a shot in his side. Captain Hardie R A who likewise Volunteered from the Cape was killed in the same action. Capt Travers has resumed the duties of his office as secretary to the High Commissioner. ----- Reinforcements of Troops for the Cape. The Ship Cospatrick arrived on Monday evening from Portsmouth with 449 men, 36 women, 29 children, of HM's 6th, 2nd , 80th, 45th, 60th, 73rd, & 84th. also officers: Capt W Campbell,2nd Regt in command; Ensign F R Gubbine 2nd; Lt F Brown, 6th; Ass Surg Herbert 45th; Lt J Wigg 60th; Ensign G H Mackenzie 60th; Ensign W J G Goole, 60th; Ass Surg R Hayden 60th; Ensigns A H Sharpe & Pigott , 73rd; Ensigns Keog, 80th, Birch & Stace, 85th; Ass Surg, L'Estrange, CMR; Rev J Quin, Military Chaplain; Captain G Allen, Barrackmaster; Mrs Allen & family; Mrs Captain Fraser & family. The Cospartick is at present in quarantine in consequence of there having been several cases of small pox and measles amongst the passengers
