Notes
a. Note:   Comment by Rex Moore, Jr.:
In 1979, when I started my research into my family history, I visited Dyersburg, Tenn, because my father had always told me that this is where his grandmothe, Ella Thurmond Moore, had come from. While in Dyersburg, I looked up Rex Thurmond, Jr. in the phone book because my father had told me that he had been named after Rex's father. I visited with Rex, Jr and told him I was interested in the family's history. He was not able to tell me very much but he suggested that I get in touch with Dr. David Taylor in Dyersburg ecause his wife, Julia, had done a lot of research into the Thurmond family before her death. I visited with Dr. Taylor and he was nice enough to let me look through and copy his wife's notes (often referenced herein as the Notes of Julia Nash Taylor). Among her papers was a single typed sheet of paper entitled "Data Found Among Alice T. Meriwether's Papers - Presumably Written by Mary Moor Nichols". On this piece of paper was typed the following:
 Mary Moor - born April 16th, 1822
Milton Moor was born Dec. 26, 1825
Martha Moor was born Aug. 11, 1829
Andrew J. Moore born Jan. 24, 1831 or 1832 (scratched over)
 James T. Moore born Jan. 6, 1835
 Nancy (C. or T.) Moore Oct. 21, 1839
William Moore born May 24, 1842
 D. Moore born Dec. 21, 1848
  Deaths:
Lucy Moor died Nov. 21, 1850
 Nancy E. died sept. 14, 1852
William, Sr. died Jan. 1, 1856
 Martha Baldridge Aug. 29, 1857
William Moore, Jr. Aug. 27, 1860
On another piece of paper were the following names:
 Mary Cartright
 Lucy Moor
 Mary Moor
At the time, I had no idea that these names and dates had anything to do with my Moore line. It was not until several years later, after much research, that I came to realize that these names and dates actually applied to the family of my great-great-grandfather, Andrew J. Moore!!! Although some of the dates were wrong on the first piece of paper, I was able to extend my genealogy to the extent you see in this report.
The parents of William Moor are not known at this time and repeated efforts to identify them have been futile. However, from deeds and other documents dated in the early 1800's in Williamson Co., Tenn. , it seems that his mother's name was probably Mary and that his father had died or disappeared before about 1804. From the information in Mary Moor Nichols' papers mentioned above, it is quite likely that her maiden name was Cartright. The above piece of paper with the three names on it seems to show the progression of the name Mary from Mary Cartright through Lucy (Cooper) Moor, William's wife, to his daughter, Mary Moor Nichols. Further research into the Cartright line is needed to prove this connection.
