a. Note:   Comments by Rex Moore, Jr. in 2005:
 According to "The History of Gonzales Co., Texas", page 150, D. Moore was the first postmaster for the Maurin Community Post Office. The application for the Post Office was submitted March 28, 1900 and approved July 3, 1900. He served in this capacity for two years. The Post Office was located in the mercantile store established by Firmin Maurin, for whom the community was named. An article in the Gonzales Inquirer dated Aug. 10, 1900 says "Maurin now has a post office. Mail on the Aransas Pass (Railroad) was left there today for the first time. It is about six miles east of Gonzales."
  The community of Maurin was located on what is now a Farm-to-Market Road from Denton Creek to Hwy. 90A. D. Moore lived on land he owned near where the road now makes a 90-degree turn to the right and then, just a short distance away, a 90-degree turn to the left. His older brother A.J. Moore (my great-great-grandfather) lived in the same area. In the early 1900's, D. Moore and his family moved, for health reasons, to CenterPoint in Kerr Co. Texas where he died in 1909.
  Firmin Maurin operated a limestone quarry in the area from about 1882 until 1908. The old quarry is still visible a mile or so north of the highway (Hwy. 90A) between Gonzales and Shiner. When I was a kid and we were on the way from Yoakum to Gonzales, my Daddy would always tell us kids that that was an old "penitentiary". I now believe it was just the remains of the old quarry. A Texas State Historical marker on Hwy. 90A honors the Maurin quarry. There is a lookout point on Hwy. 90A near the marker and my Daddy would always tell us that, on a clear day and with a good pair of binoculars, you could see the dome of the State Capitol in Austin from that lookoout. I never saw the dome and I'm not sure he ever did either!!
