Notes
a. Note:   N69 Hyam Mendel was the only child of his father Raymond not to go to the US. According to email received 2/9/2002 from Benjy [Munitz] Maor, he spoke with some of the Argentinian branch of the family who had immigrated to Israel. They heard that Mendel came from Riga, Russia around 1900, that he settled in Argentina through the Baron de Hirsch program and that there is a story that Shmuel (another brother) intended to go to Argentina and Mendel to the US, and they mistakenly switched boats.
Cousin Betty Munitz de Gusis disputes part of this story: "Our grandfather wasn’t wrong. He decided to follow the Jewish Colonization Association program. The JCA was founded by the great philanthropist Baron Moritz Hirsh (b 1831 in Munich) in order to save Jewish people from the east of Europe from the progroms and wars. He never lived in Buenos Aires (the capital city of Argentina). He went directly to the field.  He was happy with his decision. What a pity he [died] too young. I didn’t know him, but I know he was a remarkably wonderful person."
Hyam and Manya’s two eldest children were born in Lithuania/Russia and the other four in Argentina, where they lived all their lives. Seven grandchildren moved to Israel.
Hyam corresponded with his sister Ida in Yiddish for many years, but never lived to see his dream of coming to see the rest of the family in Los Angeles. After his death, one of his sons sent a letter saying he would like to come to LA as well. This story came from Bea Kane.
First name spelled “Manuel” on all of his children’s death certificates. I changed his name in the Tree on 5/28/2020 from the original “Hyam Mendel” to “Manuel”, moving “Hyam Mendel” to his Hebrew name.
Granddaughter Hinde Pomeraniec says “The zeide Mendel was buried in Entre Rios, not in Buenos Aires. It is another province or state here in Argentina. We always talk about him as Mendel (Manuel in spanish, right). I have never listened the name Menachem until your email.”
