a. Note:   N39 Minnie's maiden name was taken from the California Birth Index and her naturalization papers.
  According to her daughter Shirley's teacher Brian Burg in an e-mail dated 4/25/09, Minnie's husband Solomon "abandoned the family and her mother somehow managed to successfully raise three daughters during the Depression."
  From Brian's e-mail of 5/2/09: Minnie's "maiden name was not actually Levy. It was Wittenson (although her aunt's birth certificate said "Vedenson"). According to [her daughter] Shirley, when her maternal grandfather came to the U.S., he listed on the ship manifest that he was going to his brother, and the surname Levy was used, but that was actually his brother-in-law. She said she was told that that was how her mother's family happened to use the surname Levy in the U.S." Shirley told me that her mother Minnie eventually saved up enough money to legally divorce her husband.
  From Sam Leib by e-mail 9/27/2010: "Auntie Minnie [was] also known as Minnie Moo."
  From Levi Clancy by e-mail on 6/9/12: Pictures and information on Minnie and her mother Breina Lewin's family are contained in a Family Book published in 1989 which he is currently updating. From one of the pages of this book: "Millie "Minnie" (Whitenson/Levy) Munitz/Kaplan by Bea (Munitz) Leven: Mom was born in Leeds, England as Millie Whittenson on December 3, 1902. Her parents were Reuven Whittenson and Brina (Lewin) but, when the family migrated to Canada from Leeds, they changed the family name to Levy. The move took place around 1911 when my mother was nine years old. The family then moved to Los Angeles when my mother was 17 which would have been around 1920. "Minnie" married Solomon Munitz in April of 1922 when she was 19 but they divorced when she was 27, some three daughters later. She didn't remarry until she was 50. She raised the three of us (Estabelle, Bea and Shirley Munitz) alone and it was a real struggle. She died of pneumonia in 1966 at the age of 63."   Minnie appears in the 1940 Census in Los Angeles along with daughters Esta, Beatrice and Shirley as well as two sons, Jackie 8 and Harold 6.
