Notes
a. Note:   N55 Israel’s sons Raymond and Hyman Max and daughter Rose's death certificates all confirm their parents' names as Israel and Annie and their birthplace as Russia. Sometime after his son Raymond's birth, the family name changed to Mirman. Israel’s next son Hyman Max, as well as all of his brother Abraham's children, used the Mirman name. According to Cousin Esther Munitz Posen, "the Munitzes who changed to Mirman did so in order to avoid the Russian Army. I don't understand how that helped, but that is what I remember being told." "You are correct about the reason for changing last names. The Russian army conscripted any sons after the first one. So it was a fairly common practice to change the last name to avoid having the sons go into a very harsh military." from Rhea Starr.
According to JewishGen.org, it was the practice of Jews in Belarus to name their children after a dead grandparent. Therefore, if a child has the same name as his father's father, it can be inferred that the year of death of the grandfather is likely the year of birth of the grandson. More precisely, the grandfather's year of death occurred before the grandson’s year of birth.
