BIOGRAPHY: Mary Frances Abeln was born and raised in New Vienna, Iowa where she attended the parocial school. She lived in New Vienna until her marriage in 1891. Her sister Maria was her maid of honor. In April 1942 Mary Frances wrote her son Leo: "I had those papers from Cheyomelo about the land. They said the government would give me $6780. I went and showed them to Mr. Fox. He read some of it then he said he never seen any like that and thought it was too deep for him and wanted to know if he should ask Donohue to read them over and he tried to call him but he was not there. Then he read some more of it and said it was alright. Then I signed it but what I read about it they said I could signed it myself and just have a witness and send it and the abstract to the. And when they have it all looked over they would send me the money. But Henke gets $780 for his share. He had the paper signed already. I did not care to let it go. I could always think that I had some income. I don't know what is best to do now when I get the money. " In 1942 Mary Frances sold their land in Banner County. She said in a letter to her son Leo "I have that all settled about the land at Sidney. I took 7,500 dollars bonds and but 3500 on interest."
