(Abeln) Hoefer, was born March 17, 1899 on a farm 3 miles north of Albion. She received her education at Boone County School Dist. 7 and St. John's Catholic School in Petersburg. She moved to Albion with her parents in 1920. Before moving to town she had taken sewing lessons from the Gregarts, the town tailors. In 1920 she moved to Albion with her parents and worked at Carlson's Store and Glascow's Dress Shop. On April 30, 1929, she married Fredrick H. Fitzgerald at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion. Fred was born on a farm south of Albion and was working in the Chevrolet garage at the time of their marriage. After their marriage they lived on a farm south of Albion for a short time and then moved back to Albion where Fred ran a welding shop. In the years prior to retirement he ran the Farmers Union Service Station in Albion. The couple raised their family in Albion. Leona worked part-time at the West End Grocery after her children were grown. She was a life-long member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Altar Society and had been very active in the Happy Hour Extension Club.
