At approximately twenty years of age he went to California where he boarded a ship for the State of Washington. At Uniontown, Washington he worked for his brother John in a general store. While working there he homesteaded a quarter section of land near Genesee, Idaho. BIOGRAPHY: In 1891 he returned to New Vienna, Iowa and married Mary Frances Abeln. His cousin John Hoefer was his best man. Anton with Mary Frances returned to the homestead in Genesee, Idaho where they lived until the early part of 1892. At that time they sold the land and livestock for approximately two thousand dollars, and carried the money in gold with them by way of the Northern Pacific Railroad to Minneapolis, going by another railroad to New Vienna. BIOGRAPHY: In New Vienna they lived for a year in the hotel owned by his father. Here their first child, Raymond was born in March 1892. Anton tended bar in the hotel saloon until 1893 when they moved to a two hundred forty acre farm which he bought three miles north of Albion, Nebraska. The farm was located on the east side of Pleasant Valley. Florence and Frank where born in the house that Anton bought & built from a Sears catalog on the site that was situated on the farm at the time of purchase. BIOGRAPHY: In approximately 1904 a new two story square house was built from Sears catalog in which the other children were born - Marie, and Leo. In the early part of the 1900's they purchased another farm consisting of one hundred sixty acres about one fourth mile north and about one half mile west. The farm was situated on the west side of Pleasant Valley. In 1909 they purchased land near Sydney, Cheyenne County Nebraska. BIOGRAPHY: When Raymond married in 1915 he moved to this farm. The house that was situated on the home place when it was orginally purchased had been previously moved to this farm. Raymond and his wife lived in this house until 1927 when a new house was built on this farm. BIOGRAPHY: At the time of Frank's marriage in the fall of 1920 Anton and Mary moved to Albion with the unmarried children - Leona, Rose, Marie, and Leo. Frank stayed on the home place with his wife Mary. Florence married Anton Kunzman in 1915 and they moved to to his farm two miles north of the home place in Pleasant Valley. BIOGRAPHY: The house in Albion which Anton had purchased for his family was located on the northwest corner of seventh and Park Streets, which is one block west and one block south of the southwest corner of the school grounds. Anton and Mary lived in this house until their deaths in 1938 and 1948. In 1938 Anton & Mary Frances bought land in Banner County Nebraska. Married New Vienna, 7 Apr 1891 DEATH: ANT0N HOEFER PASSED AWAY AT HOSPITAL Albion Man Died at Grand Island Last Thursday; Funeral Services Monday A. V, Hoefer of Albion, passed away at the St. Francis hospital in Grand Island last Thursday night, November 24th. He had been ill for a little over two weeks and had been taken to the hospital for an operation. Anton Vincent Hoefer was born at New Vienna, Iowa, April 25, 1861. He lived there until 1884 when he went to Union Town, Washington, from which place he moved to Nebraska. He was married to Mary Abeln at New Vienna Iowa, April 7, 1891. To this union six children were born. They are: Raymond Hoefer, Mrs. Florence Kunzman, Frank Hoefer, Mrs.Rose Getzfrid Mrs. Leona Fitzgerald, all of Albion; Mrs. Marie Anderson of Kansas City, Missouri; and Leo Hoefer of Omaha. Surviving him beside his widow and chlidren are thirty-four grand children. Other relatives and a host of friends mourn his passing. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at St. Michaels' church here Monday morning, November 28, conducted by Rev. J. J. Crowley, and burial was in the St. Mlchael's cemetery. Pallbearers were George Ternes, Henry King, Anton Redler, Jacob Getzfrid, Ignatius Gartner and Bernie Brugman.
