Note: Jan Vandervoort is not the father/witness in the following records at the DRC of Flatbush: 23 Nov 1684:K Michiel. O. Johannes Michielsz; Neeltje Harmans; 's Gravesend. G. Jacob Hendricksz; Catharine Beavois [second wife of Jacob]. 14 Dec 1684: K.K. Cornelius & Adam; O. Cornelis Buijs; Machtild Gerrits. G. Johannes Michielsz; Susanna Emants; Trintje, juijsvr van Thijs Lubbertsz ]paternal great uncle], op N. Utrecht. 1) None of the witnesses have an apparent connection with the Vandervoort family (but I have not tied them to Johannes Messecar either) 2) The Vandervoort surname was adopted by the family by the time they emigrated to Maryland in 1660. This Johannes Michielsz is Johannes Machgielzen Messecar: 1648 Jun 08; Michiel Miscaer; Johannes; Casper Steynmits, Roelof Cornelissen, Christyntie and Lysbeth Year Book of The Holland Society of New York - 1914 - Bergen Book, 2nd Volume; prepared by the Recording Secretary, Executive Office: 90 West Street, New York City. Other records: Johannes Michielsz is listed in the tax assesment of Gravesend in 1683. He took the Oath of Allegience in 1687.off gravens End Johannis Machielse native Adam Machielse Messcher 40 Johannes Michielsz is not listed in the 1706 Tax Assessment of Kings Co. The Richard Michel/Michielzs of the Flatbush DRC records was probably the brother of Johannes Messecar. The Adam Michielzs of the Gravesend town records was also probably a brother of Johannes Messecar. New York Genealogical & Biographical Record, volume 115 (1984), Identity of Eve, Wife of Matthew de Decker of Staten Island by Ann Lawler Messecar, p. 91 The Mesecar line was established in this country in the year 1647 with the arrival of Machil Miscaer in New Amsterdam. A year later Machiel baptized a son, Johannes, in the St. Nicholas Reformed Dutch Church. (BDC24). The family appears to have settled in Kings County where years later (1672) Johannes was allotted a plot of land in Gravesend and older brother, Adam, was a dealer in whale oil. Both brothers lived at Gravesend in 1687 when they took the Oath of Allegiance.
