A Shipwrecked Marriage November 17, 1773 (abstracted newspaper article)
All persons are desired from the date hereof not to credit Anna, the wife of Paul Vandervoort, yoeman, of Metuan (Matawan) in Middletown Township, East New Jersey, as I am determined to pay no Debts of her contracting, as witness my hand. Paul Vandervoort.
In the next edition of the newspaper:
Mr. Rivington: - In your newspaper of the 18th of November last, appeared as advertisement, forwarning all persons not to credit Anna Vandervoort, wife of Paul Vandervoort, of Matewan. We, her neighbors, being hightly incensed at his conduct, both as to that act and many others, think it our duty to inform the public of his proceedings since he became our neighbor.....
The article mentions that Anna was the executrix of her deceased husband's estate, having left 7 children. Anna married Paul Vandervoort about 1768. Her eldest son came of age 3 months earlier which precipitated the current conflict. The conflict was apparently exacerbated by Paul's father, who owned a farm nearby.
.... Having pledged ourselves to the public for the truth of these assertions, we join in our request that you print this in your next paper, and are Sir, your humble servants, James Kearney, John Provst, Conradt Hendricks. Middletown Point, Nov., 23, 1773.
Anna Vandervoort is listed in the Middletown tax ratables from 1778 through 1781. No other Vandervoorts are listed in Monmouth in the late1700s.
