  1863: 'William Hicks fought in the Civil War in the Virginia campaigns under Gen. Lee and Jackson. William witnessed General Jackson being fired on by his own men. He helped take the General from his horse. ['Eleven Generations,' page 13]
  1863 Larry Kea CW Notes: 'The first casualty of war is TRUTH.' William's name was not recorded in the official records of those assisting Gen. Jackson when he was mortally wounded. [On the way back from scouting around United States Ford at night, troops of the Confederate 18th North Carolina Line mistakenly though Gen. Jackson and his party were Federal troops. With four of his party killed, Gen. Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson received three .69 calibre wounds on Saturday, May 2, 1863, at Chancerlorsville, Va. Mortally wounded, he was taken from his horse by Captain Wilbourne and Private Wynn, and he died eight days later on Sunday, May 10, 1863, at 3:15 PM.]
