  1861: There is a J W Kea on the roster of the Third Artillery Battalion, Co., 'E.' Organized in December, 1861, the Third Artillery Battalion was commanded by Col. E B White and Lt. Col. William H Campbell. Also known as the 'Palmetto Battalion,' Company 'E' took part in the Civil War battles (8/9/1863 - Charleston Harbor; 2/4/1865 - Carolina's Campaign) in and around Charleston, South Carolina. Led by Captain J D Johnson, Company 'E' was disbanded after the evacuation of Charleston, which took place on the evening of 2/17 - morning of 2/18/1865.
