a. Note:   nd Canada. At the age of 19 he left his parents home and worked in Vermont for three years as a farm laborer in summer and attended school in winter. He taught school in New Hampshire in the winter of 1865-66. He went to Illinois in 1866 and taught school in Fulton and McDonough counties before going to Bushnell about 1868. He began the practice of law in 1876. He married Annabelle Carson Hail 7 July 1886. He was a Republican in politics and a staunch supporter of temperance. He died of arterial sclerosis complicated with pleurisy. He was a resident of Bushnell, Illinois at the time of his marriage to Anna Hail in 1886. At the time of his death his children were all living in or near Columbus City, Montana except for Philip who was still living at home.
