Notes
a. Continued: Persis Stowell Crawford, wife of John Crawford, is buried in the East Side Cemetery along with their children Abigail Crawford and John Crawford who apparently are siblings of William Pike's wife Persis Crawford Pike. The father of Persis Stowell, Hezekiah came to Clinton, NY (soon named Jericho and later Bainbridge/Afton) with a numerous family in 1786 apparently including his daughter Persis.
Persis Crawford PIKE was apparently named after her mother Persis STOWELL. In one of his diaries William Pike of Colesville, NY, husband of Persis Crawford, mentions going in Feb. 1828 to the funeral of Abigail Crawford. This was the first formal link we found linking Persis to her sister Abigail and parents John and Persis. Abigail's tombstone identifies her as a daughter of Persis and John Crawford.
The initial source for the theory that Stowell was the maiden name for Persis is from a letter from Mrs. Coburn to Erma Griffith of 1947 quoting from Persis Pike Coons at age 83 who admits to being forgetful. Persis (Pike) Coons wrote "that her own father named her Persis after his wife or her own mother. Mrs. Coburn wrote: I suppose it might be a coincidence that they each had the same name especially if she were a cousin, i.e. her mother and grandmother. Her mother, she said was Persis Stowell." Persis Pike Coons obviously had her mother and grandmother mixed up, as it was her paternal grandmother who was Persis Stowell, not her mother. A second clue that Persis Crawford was a Stowell was finding the Crawford graves directly behind the Stowell graves with Asa almost directly in front of Persis. The document that actually proved the link was an 1815 Bainbridge deed listing all of Hezekiah Stowell's children with their spouses.
One reacher with some Dickinson diaries and letters wrote that she remembered reading in a letter to Daniel Dickinson a reference to "we saw your Aunt Crawford." Likely this reference was to Persis Stowell Crawford, wife of John Crawford, and sister to Betsey Stowell, married to Daniel Dickinson.
b. Continued: John CRAWFORD and Persis STOWELL likely married in Vermont before they removed to Jericho (later called Bainbridge), Chenango Co., NY before being enumerated in the 1800 census. This fits with Jane being their daughter born in Vermont.
It has been difficult to trace the movements of this family -- even to the point of learning the names of their large family of children. It is possible that John Crawford and some of his sons left the Bainbridge, Chenango Co. area and went to participate in the lumbering industry with the Stowells in the Susquehanna and/or Wellsboro, PA areas.
In Colesville, Broome Co., NY in 1820 was a William Crawford family. This William would have been born approximately 1791 to 1800 which means there is some possibility he could be one of the unidentified sons of John and Persis (Stowell) Crawford. He and his wife in the same age range had 2 males under 5, 1 male 10 to 15, 1 female under 5 and 1 female 10-15.
Daughter Persis CRAWFORD married William PIKE in 1819 and they lived and raised their family in Colesville, Broome Co., NY, leaving the area after her husband died in 1866.
We would probably not have known how to connect Persis, Betsey, and Rebecca to John Crawford and Persis Stowell were it not for entries in William Pike's diaries. In one he mentioned going to the funeral of Abigail Crawford, and in a later diary he indicated receiving letters from brother Amos WILMOT and Miss H. Wilmot related to the death of Persis' sister Rebecca.
Daughter Betsey CRAWFORD married Amos WILMOT and removed to Sparta, Knox Co., Illinois. From some correspondence between William Pike and Amos Wilmot referenced in a diary we believe them to be brother-in-law since William Pike refers to Amos Wilmot as brother. Also in the diary we learn that Persis' sister Rebecca died about December 1864. That leads us to believe that Rebecca was likely married and living somewhat close to Betsey and Amos Wilmot in Illinois.
It seems likely that Andrew Crawford could have been related to this family but no proof has been found. If only one male of the correct age between Levi and Andrew, I think it most likely that the son has to be Levi.
