Continued: The creator of this database came to believe that Moses Barcume fits in the branch of the Berthiaume family that lived in New York State, possibly in St. Lawrence County. Moses father and grandfather were thought to be named John which matches with the current placement, and other information on the Berthiaumes indicated it was the New York branch which changed the spelling to Barcume or Bercume. I have recently had several close DNA matches to Barcumes, Bercumes and others of the family with variant spellings. While trying to add Moses in this family in my Ancestry database, I found the marriage of Moses Barcume to his 3rd wife Susan Barringer. In this marriage record was listed the parents of Moses as John Barcume and Josephine Mitchell, which appears to be the same person as Marie Joseph St. Michael (the French form of the name).
I have primarily used the work of others in outlining the ancestry of Moses Barcume. There may be errors, and as time goes on, I will try to go back and source more of the information. Also, I was not sure in some cases how the surnames should be entered. Primarily I used the information as found in the LDS family search database, a WorldConnect database, and a FamilyCentral database. I looked for agreement where possible. Occasionally I found a few French documents, but they were difficult to read.

Moses BARCUME married his first wife Eleanor abt 1846 likely in NYS and had children Cynthia Eleanor, John H. who married Amelia Rose, Jane, Betsey A. Mahala, Laura, and Alice who married Fayette Jasper Stoddard. With second wife Katharine Maria Smith he had two children James William Barcume and May Barcume (great grandmother of Margaret Sutherland Scheffler). William married Susan __?__ and May married James Banfill.
In the 1860 census Moses Barcume's name was spelled Burcomb, in 1870 it was spelled Burkham, and in 1880 it was spelled Barcuna. Other variants are Burcum, Barcomb and Barcena. These surnames were apparently modified from the original French and French Canadian surname BERTHIAUME, perhaps pronounced something line bare-tee-home per one genforum poster. Apparently the Berthiaume family in Canada descends from Pierre Berthiaume and Jacqueline Brion (both born about 1620 in Falaise, Normandy, France).
Despite hours of searching Moses Barcume with wife Eleanor and children, the family cannot be located in the 1850 US federal census. There are families of this surname in Franklin, Clinton and St. Lawrence Counties, New York -- all of which border Canada, and it is now believed that Moses is related to some of these families.
Moses Barcume apparently lived in NYS from a time prior to 1846 to 1858. His parents may have come to NYS previous to the time he married Eleanor. There were lots of families with related surnames in St. Lawrence Co. NY. His second wife Katharine Maria Smith was born in Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York. His residences in NYS are unknown at this period of time but "my guess" is that he may be related to the section of the family that ended up in St. Lawrence Co. NY.
A descendant Steve Banfill of Washington State (where May Barcume Banfill lived just prior to her death) has a number of land records relating to property purchased by Moses Barcume. At one point Moses Barcume evidently bought 200 acres in Iowa. He also owned horses. Steve Banfill has an insurance policy issued to Moses Barcume dated 1882; it evidently mentions son James. Deed to Moses and Susan Barcume 12 Dec 1892. There is a tax receipt with Moses name on it dated 8 Jan 1900.
