a. Note:   ar; killed at the indecisive Battle of Wilderness May 5,1864 on the battlefield in northeastern Virginia near Spotsylvania. We assume he was buried near where he was killed. He enlisted Oct 12, 1861 at Green, NY. He was 21 at the time. He re-enlisted as a veteran Jan 2, 1864. He was in company D.
Note:   Gerrit served in the 76th regiment of the NYS Infantry during the Civil W
b. Note:   er William reflected on Gerrit's May 5, 1864 death on January 1, 1865 in his journal/diary and said he died in Virginia near Spotsylvania. A check of printed sources did not yield the information of whether he was one of the soldiers buried on the battle field.
Note:   Gerrit died in the Battle of Wilderness during the Civil War. His fath
