Notes
a. Note:   o., Iowa and was one of the earliest settlers even before it became a territory. Grover made a claim for land in 1857 (bought 120 acres on sections 6 and 7 Ellington township). He taught school for a time and he was the first superintendent of schools in 1858 and County Supervisor in 1860. He owned a clay pit and in 1868 and 1869 he built the Court House at Concord from brick burned on his farm in Ellington Township. Grover Maben built a 15 room brick house for which he made the bricks in 1869. Woodwork and stair casing were made from walnut trees from the family farm. In 1954 the house was considered one of the most interesting sights in the county.
Grover held a variety of political offices. In 1856 he went to Stephenson Co., Illinois staying one year before going to Hancock County. He raised fine Durham cattle and apparently averaged the sale of over 100 head of 3 year old steers annually. He was organizer of Hancock County Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Association and its first secretary in 1889. He was one of the organizers of the Farmers Savings Bank of Garner, IA and its first president in 1891.
At the time of his death W. C. Amsden, druggist in Garner, wrote a lengthy and glowing article praising Grover Maben's character and dedication to his community. He called Grover a politician in the best sense of the word and for many years every citizen of the county was his neighbor with the good Samaritan interpretation of the term. His moral character was unsullied.
There has been some question as to whether his name was Grove or Grover. Alice Link said it is Grover on the death certificate.
