Continued: Stephen Place Banfill was the son of Benjamin Banfill and Sarah/Sally Place and the husband of May Barcume who he married in 1883 in Iowa. According to Hugh Banfill, Stephen left his wife but always kept in touch with her. Stephen homesteaded to 1876 Sioux City, Iowa, June 1, 1876 -- Certificate 3135: Section 24, Township 97, Range No. 34, containing 80 acres. He sold his land in 1917 for quite a sum of money but he was penniless when he died in 1919. A marriage license was found in the records of Humboldt Co. but the actual record of his marriage to May Barcume was not completed on the form. Perhaps the certificate was returned unsigned by the minister after the ceremony or he never returned a completed certificate. In 1861 Stephen was listed separately at age 15 in the Brome, Canada East Census. In 1871 he was listed as living with his parents in Potton, Brome, Quebec. Iowa State Census Collection 1836-1925: Owner's Name: Stephen Banfill State: Minnesota - Indexed County Land ownership County: Otter Tail Town: Oak Valley Year: 1912 There is an official marriage record from the Bolton, Quebec Methodist Church from the Archives of Quebec printed from microfilm. Parents for Stephen Place Banfill 7 siblings, are found on his brother Solon Banfill's marriage license of July 1886 where we find them listed as Benjamin Banfill and Sarah Place.
