Notes
a. Continued: The origin of this John Crawford remains elusive. There were several Crawford families in Worcester County, Massachusetts who likely came from Ireland. He could have also been from Windham County, Vermont where we believe he might have married.
We learned the name of John CRAWFORD from the tombstone of Persis Crawford his wife who is buried next to two of their children. Origin, birth date, death date and place are all unknown. Later his name was found on an 1815 Bainbridge, Chenango Co. deed related to a piece of land once owned by his father-in-law Hezekiah STOWELL. All of Hezekiah's children with their spouses were listed. It is this document which definitely links the Persis, wife of John Crawford, buried in the East Side Cemetery in Afton, NY to Hezekiah Stowell. Another 1815 deed is from John and Persis Crawford selling land which had once belonged to Hezekiah Stowell to their son Joseph. A third deed from 1808 has John Crawford and Persis his wife selling parts of lot 56 in Jericho, Chenango, NY to Luther Cowl.
From the 1800 Census we learn John and Persis had 2 males under 10, 2 females under 10, and 2 females 10 to under 16. The John Crawford family listed as living in Jericho and the adults were between ages 26 and under 45. In 1810 they had 3 males under 10, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 45 and up, 2 females under 10, a female 10 to under 16, and 1 females 26 to under 45. Their first child must have been born by about 1787.
The computer printout from Chenango Co. has John Crawford living in Bainbridge (Jericho) in the 1810 Chenango census.
As mentioned above the origin of John Crawford is unknown. A search of the early settlers of Bainbridge and Afton does not yield any Crawford names. No marriage record can be located for he and Persis. Were they married in New York State, or perhaps in Vermont where the Stowell's had lived prior to moving to New York? There were some Crawfords in Vermont which could be possible parents of John, but I can find no information on any of the families. There is a documented John Crawford born 13 Sep 1764 in Shrewsbury, MA to William Crawford and wife Mary (surname not given but later identified as Mary Dinsmore or Dunsmore). This is not our John Crawford as that John Crawford has wives Rebecca Mahan (1786-1814) and Mrs. Lucy Baker and children born in Northborough, MA. William and Mary Crawford had children Jane and Levi among several others. My belief is that John Crawford and Persis likely came to Bainbridge/Jericho, NY as an already married couple with her parents and siblings.
There was a Rev. John CRAWFORD that performed a marriage in Guilford, Chenango, NY in 1848 and one in Truxton, Cortland, NY in 1849. While I do not believe at this time there is a family connection, the minister should be further investigated.
In May 2017 I (MAS} found I had a DNA match to John CRAWFORD & Persis STOWELL. That database indicated (incorrectly) John CRAWFORD was the one born in Shrewsbury, MA 13 Sep 1764 to William Crawford and Mary Dinsmore, married 26 Feb 1758. The History of the Town of Shrewsbury indicated that John Crawford was said to be Col. John Crawford who died in Northborough 8 Dec 1829 at age 65. The father of William Crawford, father of John born 1764, was William, said to have come from Ireland with his wife Margaret who died 20 Jan 1745 in Shrewsbury, MA. Her husband was dismissed to the church in Worcester, MA in 1748. Northborough History published 1921 indicated William Crawford's father was John Crawford who came to this country about 1730 and settled in Shrewsbury.
  *******
February 2019 MAS found a database on Ancestry (name of submitter not available) that listed the parents of John as William Harris Crawford (1739-1793) and Mary Sanford (1740-1793). Submitter may be Jennifer Vanderpool Groettum. John's birthdate was given as 13 Sep 1764 in Shrewsbury, MA vital records which is the birthdate of the John Crawford from Northborough who apparently lived out his life in Northborough, MA.
I find nothing on a John Crawford who married Mary Sanford.
**** John Crawford & Susanna Kelso related postings........
In 2015 with the ability to access the LDS FamilySearch through the RootsMagic7 genealogy software, I found "potential" parents in John Crawford and Susannah Kelso who married 8 Feb 1755 in Pelham, Massachusetts. To date I cannot find much information on this couple and their family and if they might have migrated to NYS. I did find the following on the Ancestry message boards, but do not see anyway to post a followup to the query of 2003.

Looking for more information on this family. They were part of a community of Scots-Irish Presbyterians, many of whom arrived in 1718:
John Crawford m. 8 Feb 1755 Susannah Kelso in Pelham, Hampshire Co., MA.
John was born 22 Sep 1722 in Rutland, Worcester Co, MA.
His parents were John Crawford and Isabel.
Susannah was born in Worcester, MA.
Her parents were Hugh Kelso and Sarah.
I would greatly appreciate any further information on the above families, especially the women, Sarah and Isabel, whose surnames are now unknown.
John Crawford and Susannah Kelso had the following children that I know of:
Sarah Crawford born abt 1756, died abt 1799.
Sarah marr. William Cowden. (I'm [Bonnie Schrack] descended from this couple.)
Isaac Crawford born 9 Mar 1758 in Pelham, MA, died 1833.
Bert Crawford born 29 Jul 1754 in Pelham, MA.
There were probably more children born to John and Susannah, and this is what I hope others will have heard about. I only recently learned about Isaac and Bert from another online researcher. I'm looking particularly for other _daughters_ of Susannah Kelso and John Crawford. ..... Bonnie Schrack

From Ron Roby in Jan 2009: I have the names of eleven children for John Crawford and Susannah (Kelso) Crawford, but Isaac is not one of them, although I show a son born in 1758 whose name I do not have. The names I have are: Rober (maybe Bert), Darah, John, Hannah, a second John, Joel, Levi, Anne, Susannah, Israel and Margaret. I am related to the husband of Anna Cowden, a daughter of John and Susannah (Kelso) Crawford's Sarah who married William Cowden. I really am trying to find information about the ancestry of John Crawford. Other than his parents' names, John (1695-1761) and Isabel (b. 1695), I have nothing.

Another Roby posting Jan 17, 2009:
  Hi Bonnie...
Yes, i made a typo on "Darah" and that should be Sarah born in 1756. Your Isaac fits right in the place I have a son whose name I did not have...do you now if this is Isaac Crawford who married the Isaac Crawford who married Nancy Frazier? Otherwise it looks like we are in agreement on all but Robert, who I show being born 29 July 1754. I will check my sources on that for you.
I have their father, John Crawford, Junior, born in Rutland, Massachusetts, son of John and Isabel. I also have a daughter for John and Isabel named Rosanna born about 1716, in Northern Ireland, who married John More of Ardstraw, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland/Ulster; John More and Rosanna Crawford were married in Rutland, Worcester County, Massachusetts, 4 December 1735.
I am trying to locate where their father, John Crawford, the one who married Isabel was from.
My connection to Anna Cowden's husband George Graham: his father William Graham (17 March 1749/50 - about 1821) and mother Mary McBurney (c. 1750- c. 1819)'s youngest child was Jane (1781-19 April 1849) who married John David French (January 1778-17 April 1857); two of John David French and Jane (Graham) French's daughters are my great-great-grandmothers:Susan who married John Hanson Elsey, and Nancy who married George Roby. There is some intermarrying of cousins within the descendents of William and Mary (McBurney) Graham, so there are other connections but that is the basic way.

b. Continued: A John Crawford is listed in an estate for John Hammonds in Bainbridge as a creditor for 50 cents in 1812. It would appear he was probably alive in 1819 when Peter Betts swore he saw John Crawford and his wife sign a deed in 1815. He was not listed in the 1820 census. Since his wife is buried in Afton, it seems likely that he had died before her. His place of death and burial place have not been found.
c. Continued: John CRAWFORD and Persis STOWELL likely married in Vermont before they removed to Jericho (later called Bainbridge), Chenango Co., NY before being enumerated in the 1800 census. This fits with Jane being their daughter born in Vermont.
It has been difficult to trace the movements of this family -- even to the point of learning the names of their large family of children. It is possible that John Crawford and some of his sons left the Bainbridge, Chenango Co. area and went to participate in the lumbering industry with the Stowells in the Susquehanna and/or Wellsboro, PA areas.
In Colesville, Broome Co., NY in 1820 was a William Crawford family. This William would have been born approximately 1791 to 1800 which means there is some possibility he could be one of the unidentified sons of John and Persis (Stowell) Crawford. He and his wife in the same age range had 2 males under 5, 1 male 10 to 15, 1 female under 5 and 1 female 10-15.
Daughter Persis CRAWFORD married William PIKE in 1819 and they lived and raised their family in Colesville, Broome Co., NY, leaving the area after her husband died in 1866.
We would probably not have known how to connect Persis, Betsey, and Rebecca to John Crawford and Persis Stowell were it not for entries in William Pike's diaries. In one he mentioned going to the funeral of Abigail Crawford, and in a later diary he indicated receiving letters from brother Amos WILMOT and Miss H. Wilmot related to the death of Persis' sister Rebecca.
Daughter Betsey CRAWFORD married Amos WILMOT and removed to Sparta, Knox Co., Illinois. From some correspondence between William Pike and Amos Wilmot referenced in a diary we believe them to be brother-in-law since William Pike refers to Amos Wilmot as brother. Also in the diary we learn that Persis' sister Rebecca died about December 1864. That leads us to believe that Rebecca was likely married and living somewhat close to Betsey and Amos Wilmot in Illinois.
It seems likely that Andrew Crawford could have been related to this family but no proof has been found. If only one male of the correct age between Levi and Andrew, I think it most likely that the son has to be Levi.
