a. Note:   ontext of going to the house of mourning, i.e. attending the funeral on February 8, 1828. One can assume from the context of the diary entry that the funeral was relatively near to where William and Persis were living. Bainbridge was only a few miles from Colesville.
  It was my first assumption that Abigail was Persis' mother and William Pike's mother-in-law, but it is now known Abigail was the sister of Persis. Abigail Crawford was buried in the East Afton Cemetery with a death date of Feb. 4, 1828. Persis Crawford, wife of John, was buried in 1839. Since Persis Crawford, wife of William Pike, was born in Chenango Co., William mentions Abigail in his diary, the dates of her death and funeral correspond, there is little doubt that we have made the family connection and that Persis Stowell and John Crawford are the parents of both Abigail and Persis Crawford.
  Tombstone Inscription:
