Notes
a. Continued:   Eliza Campbell Sutherland's 15th child, a son, was stillborn.
b. Continued:   Per Mike Miller obituary reads:
AN APPRECIATION: I read with regret in the John O'Groat Journal of 10th April notice of the death of Iliza Sutherland which occurred at Thruso on the 18th of that month, at the advanced age of 86 years. In the days of my youth I had the privilege of knowing the venerable old lade who has passed away, and had occasion to be much associated with the family to which she belonged. Her father, the late Thomas Sutherland, was a man of singular piety, and was known and highly respected throughout the who county of Caithness. He had the honorable position of being the leading elder in Latheron Free Church under the ministry of the late Hon. George Davidson, and afterwards under that of the late Principal McCulloch of the Free Church, who succeeded Mr. Davidson in Latheron. Those were the days of the "Men" who were associates of the saintly Alexander Gair, and whose names have been deeply cut into the ecclesiastical history of Caithness. Their gifts of speech and devotional fervor were such as to draw together possibly the largest worshipping congregations in the Highlands. On communion occasions people came hither from the adjacent counties and assembled on "Tor Larn" to hear these Men. Amidst such surroundings, and reared in an atmosphere of righteousness, the deceased Eliza Sutherland manifested in her life and character the fruits of her early upbringing. Of her it could be said "She was a mother in Israel." For many years Mrs. Sutherland was devotedly cared for by her daughter Miss Carrie Sutherland. Such filial love for the aged mother by her daughter is a standing testimony to the daughter's sense of duty. (J. S.)
