She received her primary school education just opposite her home. Her father passed away when she was 5, and her mother when she was 14. At this time she went to work at Monarch Shirts in Shepherd Street, Chippendale, where she met Merle Smith. As her children were nearing their final years in primary school she returned to work at Freedom Manucturing, sewing mens' underpants, initially at Reynolds St, Balmain, and later at Darling St, Balmain East. She lived at 47 Hornsey St, from 1943 to 2006.
