Note: ***** The only records that have survived in Caroline Co., VA are the Order Books. There are five Waldrops mentioned in these Order Books between 1734 and 1765. James bought land from Henry and Sarah Morris in 1734 and sold land to Michael Waldrop in 1744. James Waldrop's estate was sued by Andrew Anderson in 1745. David Smith claimed his estate was settled in 1747 and named one son, James. (We could not find any evidence of this claim at the Library of Richmond in 2014. David didn't cite a source for his claim in our letters.) Either the father or the son was sued in 1747 by Thomas Parker. We believe this was James the elder and the suit was dismissed because James had died. In 1764 and 1765, the names of Robert and John Wardrope appear several times in the Order Books. These two are certainly eligible to be grandsons of James Waldrope who died about 1746-47. This James would also be eligible to be the grandparent of the Louisa Co., VA Waldrops. To our knowledge no one has ever found a reason to attempt to combine these families. ***** It is difficult to believe that this James Waldrop was not a relative of the Michael who was transported by the Clairbornes. However, no evidence has been found to prove a relationship. Only in theory can we say that families pushed north and west from their origin. Caroline is north and west of King William Co., where Michael was located. Caroline was created in 1728 from Essex, King & Queen and King William counties. The Order Books give scant evidence pertaining to the Waldrop family that lived there. The same year Luke Waldrop was in Hanover Co., VA and the year before Joseph Waldrop showed up in Amelia Co., VA, this James showed up in Caroline Co., VA. In 1734, Henry and Sarah Morris acknowledged their deed of lease and release to James. Ten years later, in 1744, James acknowledged his deed of lease and release of land indented to Michael Waldrope. So, we have the name Michael associated with James. The next year, 1745, James apparently died. Andrew Anderson filed suit against the estate of James Waldrop. The suit was dismissed. Then, in 1747, James Waldrop settled the estate of James Waldrop. We call this James the son of James. Another dismissed suit against James Waldrop by Thomas Parker and evidence of James ceases to exist. Then, In 1764-1765, a Robert Wardrope and a John Wardrope show up in the Caroline Co., VA order books. They were involved in court actions. They seemed to be cross ways with the Phillips and Spiller families. These men were the right age to be children of either James, son of James or the Michael Waldrop that James sold land to in 1744. Again, no evidence. And, there is no evidence of the John and Robert in any records after 1765. So, this family remains a loose end for us. James could be the odd James that received the land grant on the Enoree River in SC in 1772. There was a John Waldrop who bought his land in 1787. Or, this could be the family that bore Samuel Waldrop of Louisa Co., VA. To date, neither has any basis of proof of any kind. ***** 1734 --- CAROLINE CO., VA. Caroline County Order Book 1732-1740. "The only documentation I have for this James Waldrop I is his Estate Records in Caroline Co., VA. Evidently he did live in King and Queen Co., VA before the area was split off into Caroline Co., VA. This James Waldrop died ca. 1747 ... and was most definitely not any of the James Waldrops who lived in Laurens Co., SC after 1770. This James had a son named James Waldrop Jr. This James Jr. stayed in Caroline Co., VA until ca. 1760 when I lost track of him. It is possible that he moved to SC, but I have no indication that he did. It appears that there were TWO James Waldrops who received Land Grants in Laurens Co., SC in 1772. Both Grants were for 100 acres and one was received on 19 June 1772 made to James, son of Michael III. The other was received 11 Aug 1772 and made to James, son of Michael IV. I might mention that a James Waldrop received a land Grant in Spartanburg Co., SC SOMETIME, but I do not know the date or who this James Waldrop might be. I tend to believe that the James Waldrop who received the Land Grant on 19 June 1772 died in 1787, and that he is also the James Waldrop who was incarcerated in the Newberry Co., SC jail during the Revolutionary War for refusing to fight for the Patriots. He was released a few days later when a judge ruled that SC could not incarcerate anyone for refusing to commit treason. I suspect, but cannot document that it was this James Waldrop who was the father of William who married a daughter of Rev. soldier, James Waldrop who died in Fayette Co., GA. It is my idea that there was no close relationship between this James Waldrop who received the Land Grant in Laurens Co. SC 19 Jun 1772 and the John Waldrop with wife Elizabeth who bought this land on 23 Jan 1787. I suspect but cannot document that the John Waldrop who bought this land on 23 Jan 1787 was a descendant of William Waldrop who died 1730 in New Hanover Co., NC. [Incidently, there were two Waldrop men whose wives were named "Elizabeth." One was John Waldrop who bought the above mentioned land 23 Jan 1787, and the other was James Waldrop who received the Land Grant 11 Aug 1772. Most probably one of these Elizabeths was Elizabeth Nelson, but I do not know which one.]-End David P. Smith note. **********
