Notes
a. Note:   ***** Documentation and descendants get a little easier with this generation of Waldrops. It still takes a vivid imagination to see the connections at times, but there are more documents and the gaps in the timelines encompass fewer years than before. One thing is certain. We don't have it all right. We have some of it right and we have recorded a lot of documents that may help us or someone down the road get it right. There are Waldrops in the Carolinas in the late 1700s and early 1800s that have been ignored. There are too many Waldrop families in GA, AL, TN, MS in the early 1800s that have no fathers. Virtually all of what we and others have done is record our opinions and suppositions based on the records we have found. That's what we share, our opinion.
We call this Michael III because we have used David Smith's fabricated Michael II to hold the Waldrop family together. We call this Michael the brother of James in Caroline Co., VA because they were both mentioned in a court document in 1744. We call this Michael's wife Sarah because in 1749 Caroline Co., VA, Michael and wife, Sarah acknowledge a deed indented to James Foster. [The Samuel Waldrop [RIN 3947] of Louisa Co., VA married Jane Foster. We wonder if there is a connection].
In 1757, a Michael Waldrop showed up on New Hope Creek in Orange Co., NC. We have no evidence that Michael in Caroline Co., VA was there after 1749. Rather than say he died, we moved him to Orange Co., NC. He may have owned as much as a thousand acres of land around New Hope Creek by 1760 if the abstracts we have are accurate. We know he received a 370 acre grant in 1761 and that Thomas Nelson was a chain carrier for the Survey of this land. [Remember James Nelson's Will in 1799 Orange Co., NC gave to his sister, Elizabeth Waldrop.]
Michael was in court several times in 1762 and 1763, first with William Kelly, then with James Bowie. In 1763, he was called Michael, Sr. indicating to us that there was a Michael, Jr. In 1766, Michael and Michael, Jr. applied for SC Land Grants. Senior applied for 150 acres on the Saluda River. Junior applied for 100 acres on the Enoree River. Grants at that time were based on the size of the family, one hundred acres for head of household, 50 acre for each additional family member. Michael, Jr. at some time before the survey revised his original request. He, like his father received 150 acres.
Both Michael Sr. and Jr. received the grants they requested. The grants were in Craven Co., SC on the north side of the Enoree River. The Enoree River is the boundary between what became Laurens and Spartanburg Co., SC. The grants were on the Spartanburg side of the river. The first grant in 1768 was bounded on the Southwest by the Enoree River, all other sides vacant. The survey of this land was for Michael Waldrop, Jun'r. The other grant, in 1771, was bounded on the west by the Enoree, east by Edward Musgrove and other sides vacant. This was Michael Senior's land.
In 1770, Michael Waldrop, "Senior" sold 150 acres to Edward Musgrove. The land description in the deed matched the grant of 1768 to "Junior". We are inclined to believe Michael, Sr. had died and it was Michael, Jr., now Sr. who sold his land to Musgrove and took up residence on the land of his father that was granted in 1771. We believe the reason for the delay was that Sr. had requested land on the Saluda originally and changed his request to the Enoree after his son's grant was received. In any event, the land bordered on the West by the Enoree River and on the East by Edward Musgrove was the property that stayed in the Waldrop family.
There are several deeds in Orange Co., NC in the late 1779-1791 time period that refer to "land granted to Michael Waldrop and sold to Hart". With this evidence, we confidently call Michael Sr. and Jr. father and son and move them from Orange Co., NC to Spartanburg Co., SC.
