DAHLMAN, GEORGE C. (SSAN: 396-52-3557) SPECIALIST FIVE United States Army, Troop C, 3d Squadron, 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry Division APO 96373 Awarded: Silver Star Date action: 18 April 1969 Theater:Republic of Vietnam Reason; For gallantry in action Involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Specialist Dahlman distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 April 1969 while serving as an Armored Personnel Carrier Driver with Troop C, 3d Squadron, 5th Cavalry, on a combat mission In Quang Tri Province. Troop C was deployed in a night defensive position when it suddenly came under intense mortar and ground attack, incurring several casualties. Disregarding his own safety, Specialist Dahlman immediately braved the hail of rounds to go to the aid of his wounded comrades, Soon realizing that the perimeter was being overrun, he made his way to a damaged armored personnel carrier, changed the barrel of its machine gun and delivered a devastating volume of fire which re-secured the perimeter. Specialist Dahlman then began to aid and evacuate the wounded for the second time, but, when the enemy threatened once more, he returned to his gun and, while repelling the enemy forces, was mortally wounded by small arms fire, Specialist Dahlman's extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
