APPLICATION FOR PENSION

On this 17th day of August, 1898, personally appeared before me, a Clerk of the Circuit Court in and for the said county and State, ____ , aged 72 years, by occupation a farmer, who, being duly sworn according to the law, declares that he is the identical ____ who was, on the 6th day of October, 1861, enrolled in J. R. Northcutt Company E of Calhoun County, State of Alabama, and that while serving as a private in E Company, 22nd Ala Regiment, Days Brigade, and in the line of his duty at Franklin in the State of Tennessee, on or about the 30th day of November 1864, "I was shot through the left knee leaving the joint stiff so that I have not been able to bend it- within the last year I suffered continuously with pain in that knee which makes me helpless and unable to do any work". And that as the result of said injuries I am now unable to earn a livelihood; that I am a citizen of said County and State, and I have been a bona fide citizen of the State of Florida continuously since January 1st, 1880; that neither I nor my wife owns property to the to the value of fifteen hundred dollars in this or any other State, and that I am not "otherwise enabled or in a position to earn a livelihood;" that I am not receiving a pension from the United States, or any other State; that I never deserted the Confederate service, and make this declaration for the purpose of being placed upon the invalid pension roll of the State of Florida; as provided by the Act of the Legislature approved June 8, 1889, as amended June 2, 1893 and June 15, 1897. evidence of diseased bone from scars and abscesses about joint".

He is very much in need of help and the county clerk seemed to think there was no reason why that claim wasn't accepted.

On this 7th day of December, 1901, personally appeared before me, Clerk of the Circuit Court in and for said county and State, James M. McEwen, who by me being duly sworn, declares he is the identical person who enlisted on or about the ____ day of Sept. 1861, in Captain J. R. Northcut Company, county of Calhoun, State of Alabama and while in actual service in said company, "E" 22 Ala. Regiment, State of Alabama on or about the ____ day of ____, 186__, and was honorably discharged at the expiration of my service on the ____ day of ____ in ____, State______.
(Here state fully and clearly all the facts, showing the injury, its character,
and especially the extent of the injury and disability resulting therefrom).
I "was wounded through the left knee in 1864 at Kennesaw above Atlanta and was unable to ever return to my command was on furlough on account of the wound at my home in Calhoun County Alabama when the war ended I now apply for a pension on account of physical disability and old age being over 65 years of age" and that as the direct result of said injuries, thus received in the line of duty during the war, I am now unable to gain a livelihood by manual labor; that I have continuously since January 1, 1885, been a citizen of Florida; that neither I or my wife, or both combined, own real and personal property to the value of $800 in this or any other State, and have not purposely disposed of our property for the purpose of availing ourselves of the provisions of the pension laws of Florida; that I am not otherwise enabled, or in a position to earn, and have no income from any source sufficient for a livelihood by manual labor, and that I never deserted the Confederate service, and that I receive a pension from no other source.

said joint stiff. Said wound received in battle of Kennesaw in year 1864 so represented by said McEwen. Also I find a hernia on right side which he received while under great strain about 9 years ago all of which renders him unable to earn a living by manual labor at least 3/4 (three fourth)

I, W. T. Shelton, M. D., of Umatilla, Fla., do hereby certify that I made an examination of the physical condition of James McEwen during the year 1901 and made the following certificate to his application for pension under the laws of Florida, to-wit:
"We, the undersigned physicians, residents of the State and county aforesaid do solemnly swear that we have carefully examined Jas. M. McEwen, who is personally known to us to be the person above applying for a pension under the laws of Florida and find that 1 1/2 inches above the knee joint on the left leg a wound or scar of the minnie ball, which passed through the leg injuring the bone and joint to the
extent of rendering such joint stiff. Said wound received in battle of Kennesaw in the year 1864 so represented by McEwen; also, find hernia on the right side, which was received under great strain about 9 years, all of which renders himunable to earn a living by manual labor, at least 3/4.
