From "Questions and answers to a letter written to Sam Hood
 by Bertha 7 Jan. 1962
 1. Did grandfather Robert Barfield Hood fight in tha Civil War?
 A. Yes.
 Q. with what group and what side?
 A. South. Do not know what group. E. G. Hood family could tell
 you probably.
 2. Are there any stories about him of these war years?
 A. Don't know of any.
Shortly after the war he moved to Florida and was there three years.
He was around Madison and West Farms, Florida. He left there and went
to Cochran, Ga. and got him a place there and settled. When he went there
he bought that property where Samson and Abbie Parker live now.He built
that house right where Samson and Abbie live. He paid $1.00 an acre for
405 acres. I tried to find his family bible when I was down there, but the
Bible was put in a barrel when they moved and the rats destroyed it. It was
a log house with two fire places, with a chimney built at each end of it. They
tore these chimneys out and built it right in the middle of the room. I would
say the log house was about 48 ft. by 18 ft. The other exterior rooms have
been added on with lumber. Father and mother married in 1880.
  3. Do you remember him, what did he look like?
 A. Yes, he was a fine gentleman. He was tall with broad sholders and blue
eyes. He had sandy complexion (red sandy hair) and bald. He was good
looking. His profession was working timber --- getting gum from the tree to
make turpintine, and rosen. He was well fixed financially. He gave each of
his children a farm with a house on it (Long before he died around Empire).
He was justice of the peace at Empire Ga. for 40 years approximately. He
was never belonged to any other church until he was baptized into the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was about 80 or 81 when
he was baptized. His wife was baptized shortly afterward. Elder Justin M.
Green from Preston Idaho baptized Grandpa Hood (Robert Barfield Hood).
Elder Brigham F. Stewart of Alpine of Apache Co., Arizona baptized
Grandmother, Mary Marand Thornton Hood. They are buried in the Hood
cemetary there on the Samson Parker place, which is about a quarter of a mile
out in the field from the house Samson Parker now lives in. Direction being
Southeast, There is a fence around the cemetary. They do not use it anymore.
Ed's first wife and my youngest sister is buried there. Some other too.
  Robert Barfield Hood
As Told By Sam Hood In An Interview By Bertha Hood Smith
 24 Aug 1963 , Ukiah, California
Moved to Florida for three years after the Civil War--then moved to Cochran,
Georgia (Curtis and Becky have copy of deed). Then bought land at Empire,
Georgia. But before he moved there he built a house on it and worked his
trees for turpentine rosen. Early in life worked in mercantile establishment
in Goldsboro and Wilmington, North Carolina. Was a farmer before the Civil
 War.
Sherman's Army camped right around his (R. B. Hood) home and they burned
about everything except little corn and bacon. All that was left standing was
 cooking shack.
When R. B. Hood came home from the war, he didn't want to stay but had to
stay awhile until he could move his family to Florida.
He and four brothers fought in the Civil War with the south.
(Bertha's notes -- Five Hood brothers. Only one got slightly wounded.)
Looks: Tall blond hair, blue eyes, over six feet, medium build.
Raised in North Carolina (Wayne County). Loved to fish. Children loved to
be around him and he liked them. He was well liked by his neighbors. Used to
have lots of people at his place to have social and dances.
 R. B. Hood gave each one of his children a good little tract of land "so he
could die in peace". The 175 acres where Sampson Parker lives was the
original homestead and gave to Elijah Ballard Hood, and Sam Hood was
 raised there.
 R. B. Hood baptized by Elder J. M. Green. Grandma Hood baptized by
Elder B. F. Stewart, Alpine, Apache County, Arizona.
Questions and answers to a letter to Sam Hood by Bertha 7 Jan. 1962
 4. What did he do for a living?
 A. In his later years he farmed, raised a few pigs, cows, chickens and
vegetables. No cotton. Grew some corn to feed animals with. He read a
lot and was well educated. Did go to school in early days.
  Dear Family,
There are two volumes of "L.D.S. Family and Individual Record" journals
Publised 1913 that I have. One is in Sam Hood's hand writing or maybe
Mentie's and one is iN Amy Hood's hand writing. The oldest which I've
typed is attached. Some of the people on the cover I don't know, I'm sure
some of the lettering I've not understood and added a (?) of italics. I'm
not sure that will show up in the RTF (Rich Text File). I know that much
of this was written from Sam's memory and is subject to errors. But this
is a very good source and together with the questions Mike Crandall asks
and information he gives we should be able to start to gather additional
 source data on our relatives.
 Mike
 P.S. Mike
I'll go though what you sent me along with this file too and see if we find
more questions than answers. The more we know the more we want to
learn. I find it interesting that Effie was not named just like Sam for the
first few years, I wonder if that was a family tradition?
This is from the RTF Text File Mike mentions.
