If you're talking about William Thornton born 1821, his wife
was Mary Bell, daughter of Benjamin Bell and Rebecca Johnson.
William and Marys children were: Ursula/Sue, Remus, William
H., Mary Elizabeth, Willis H., Sardia?, Cornelia/Dee(my line),
Lucious/Lewis, and a child Orrilus is by a 2nd wife, a widow,
Mrs. Mary Frances McPherson.

Maybe I have it straight this time:
William E. Thornton b 1822/23. Appears in 1850 census (I THINK this
is him) as m. (2/3/1846) to Mary Bell (she is 32; he is 28) Two
children: Ursula (3) and Rimmous (2). I don't find Mary and the
children in later censuses. He is listed without the "E". They lived
in Enumeration District #2. Is that the same as the later Elevation Twp.?
In 1860-1880 censuses, he is listed as William E., m. (3/21/1852) to
Penelope Harriet Creech (b. abt 1830) Their children: Neal (1856);
Alexander (1860); Richard W. (1862); Pharaoh (1864); Willis (1866);
Mary Florence (1870) and Sarah (1872). They lived in Elevation Township.
Questions: (1) Who are William's parents? I thought Nathaniel (b. 1783)
might have been his father, but he went to IL. Could Owen be his father?
(2)What happened to Mary? Was she actually married to a different William?

Maybe this can help you?
My William Thornton was born 24 Aug.1821 Sampson?Johnston Co.,NC.
Married 3 Feb.1846 in Johnston Co.,NC to Mary Bell.
In 1852 they moved to Itawamba/Lee Co.,Mississippi, raised a few
more children, one of which was my GreatGrandmother.
Mary Bell Thornton died and William moved on up to Southwestern
Kentucky with some of the children, and remarried,
(Around Hickman--Carlisle--and Ballard Counties.)
Hope this does not disappoint you so much, but could help you
eliminate more possibilities.
