Notes
a. Note:   ury, Yorkshire, England
John was the fourth child of John Whiteley and Hannah Broadhead. He was born at Greenowlers, their residence. Greenowlers is located in Austonley Township in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. John's father and his grandfather were clothiers, i.e. merchant weavers and dyers of woolen cloth. They owned the Bilberry Mill. John was the third oldest surviving child. He had an older brother Joseph and an older sister Maria. All emigrated to the US in 1853, and lived in Philadelphia. The two oldest children never married.
Christened February 11, 1820, Chapelry of Holmfirth, Parish of Almondbury, Yorkshire. Listed in the Austonley census of 1841 living at Greenowlers.
John married three times having been widowed twice. His first wife was Mary Pogson. They had one child, Mary Jane. When Mary Pogson died in England, John married her sister Hannah. She emigrated to Philadelphia with John in 1853. Hannah had four children. When Hannah died, John married his third wife, Mary Ann Marshall. She bore John ten children. All told John had 15 children and 27 grand children. The youngest grandchild was Howard Whiteley, and it is he who began to assemble this Whiteley genealogy.
Five years after emigrating to America, John entered into partnership with his two brothers Joseph and Joshua and a fourth person, John Ashworth to manufacture and sell woolen and cotton goods. The firm name was Whiteley Brothers and Company and was located in Cardington, Upper Darby, PA. They purchased and operated a mill on Cobbs Creek until about 1881. In 1865, the original partnership was dissolved but re-established under the same name with John and Joseph joining in partnership with their two youngest brothers Henry and Hugh. At that time, Joshua left to purchase and operate his own mill in New Hope, PA.
Buried St. James Church, Kingsessing, PA
