  Joshua was born at Greenowlers in Austonley Township In 1823 . Joshua is listed in the Austonley census of 1841 and 1851 as living at Greenowlers. He emigrated to America in 1853 and settled in Upper Darby, PA. Roger Whiteley a great-grandson has the diary that Joshua kept during his crossing of the Atlantic on the "City of Glascow". In 1856, he and his older brothers established a partnership called the Whiteley Brothers Company, which manufactured cotton and woolen goods. The company owned a mill on Cobbs Creek in Upper Darby.
  The company formed in 1856 operated as a partnership of Joseph, John, and Joshua Whiteley, and John Ashworth. This was dissolved on January 4, 1865 and a new partnership formed with Joseph, John, Henry, and Hugh Whiteley. At that time Joshua moved to New Hope, PA where he purchased and operated a cotton and woolen mill until about 1883. The walls of the New Hope mill are still standing and have been incorporated into a contemporary style home. The homestead sits across the mill stream on Sugan Road in New Hope.
  Joshua married Catherine Buckley (1828 - 1869) in 1856. Catherine was born in Lancaster, England and emigrated to America in 1854 settling in Upper Darby where they met. Joshua and Catherine had five children. Two months after Catherine died in September 1869, Joshua married her younger sister Lavina Buckley (1848-1914). Joshua and Lavina had thirteen children plus an adopted child Brenton Hubbard.
  Joshua died at home in New Hope in 1909 and is buried in Holcombe Riverview Cemetery in Lambertville, NJ.
