Notes
a. Note:   Message from Loretta Eastman: DearCraig,
YesI know the name Pipitone and heard it many times. I need to sit down and writeall the things I recall about grandpa Barber as I was with him my whole life.Although not my blood, he was always considered our grandfather and we lovedhim dearly.
I knowhe went back to Italy to get his mother and was caught up in a war there. Ialways heard he was in 2 wars. I think he was the one who brought his mother tothe US.
TheBarberas were bootleggers (still own liquor stores in Beloit and Rockford) andGrandpa always disapproved. Hence he changed the spelling of his name toBarber. He was invited to Italian weddings etc as a family member, he neverreally approved. He was a devote Christian and always had a grotto in hisgarden.
Changinghis name had some really funny moments. Mom told me that since Barber is anEnglish name, people were surprised when they came to his shop and found thislittle short Italian man.
Myrespect for Grandpa grows every time I see or hear about today's immigrants whorefuse to learn English. He worked all day and then went to night school so hecould learn English. He would really scold those people because he believedthat speaking English was part of being an American. I agree!
Momtold me about some members of the family, (not sure if Barbera or Pipitone) hadto hire watch men to protect their property during Prohibition. Also that therewas a hit put out on someone and they hired a man to lay in the grass neartheir front door. After several weeks and lots of money spent, theydiscovered it wasn't their family member.
Forseveral years Grandpa raised two little girls alone, worked all day and studiedEnglish in the evening. And he never took any money or help from anyone. Unliketodays "immigrants" he did not believe in Welfare.
  Keep in touch! Loretta
