Notes
a. Note:   ***** Researchers have resisted taking this Joseph Waldrop into the family of Michael and Luke for many years. While King William, Caroline, Louisa and Hanover Co., VA are closely connected, Amelia Co. is several counties away. Joseph's name was spelled Worldrop instead of Waldrop. There was no evidence that the Amelia Co. Waldrops were acquainted with the SC Waldrops. One of the biggest reasons was probably a John and James Waldrop in Amelia Co., VA at the same time Joseph was there. Researchers didn't connect these three men to each other, either. The John Waldrop of Amelia was brought to SC and was a convenient dumping place for Waldrops that didn't fit the families of the descendants of Luke Waldrop. However, imaginings have a way of catching up with us. Descendants of this Joseph in the DNA Project have the same bloodline as most of the SC Waldrops.
The records of Amelia Co., VA are extant and Joseph appears many times in the records from 1735 to 1775. His Will in 1775 named his children and his wife. He had a son, Luke, Michael, Joseph and William. These names are most familiar with descendants of Luke and Michael in SC. It may not be a coincidence that Joseph was on the same tax list (David Greenhill's) in 1763 that John and James Waldrop were on.
Joseph's age would make him eligible to be a brother of Luke, Michael and James.
Before DNA, this Joseph was thought to be an immigrant. He was listed on the Amelia Co., VA tithe lists from 1735 thru 1747, but his tithe was paid by someone else. He first paid tithes for himself in 1748. However, there is a participant in the SMGF DNA project that claims he descends from this Joseph. If he is correct, then, this Joseph is related to Luke and Christian Waldrop. The DNA is a match. It is still possible that this was a cousin that immigrated years later, making him related to Luke "not in this country". It is also possible that this Joseph was a son of our imagined Michael II.
In any case, this Joseph left the family he was born to very early in his life. His name has, like most of our ancestors, been spelled in a variety of ways. But, in modern times, most of the descendants of this Joseph spell their name Waltrip.

Ann is the only documented wife.
 **********
Note from David Smith to Jan Dawson - "Possibly Joseph had three wives. If so, no info on his first wife. His second wife would have been Elizabeth Vest (West), widow of Valentine Vest, and his third wife was Ann. The first 5-6 children were by his first wife; his last 4-5 children were by Elizabeth. He had no children by Ann, whom a descendant said ran off with another man. There is no proof of this, although the younger children definitely went to live with neighbors after Joseph died."
 **********
Note by Jan Dawson--This is not the same Joseph as James Joseph Wardrop. The locations and children are different.
 **********
Note by Howard Leon Waldrop--In Jan 1941 Allie Wright Osborne wrote her remembrances of the Waltrip family history. Allie was 71 years old at the time. In Oct 1986, Jun 1987, and lastly Jul 1987, David R. Dawdy made several additions to Allie's first record. The first few generations are from their accounts.
Old family tradition said the Waltrips came from Wales to VA. This is obviously not true since one of the so-called brothers was born in VA in 1776. Descendants of Jesse Waltrip were living in Davies Co., KY. in 1991 according to William Reuben Waltrip, 3rd great grandson of Joseph Waltrip who wrote a short family history in August 1991.

 Subject: Barnes and Waldrop
Please help me out as you show Sally Barnes Rivers, daughter of William Rivers and Susannah Barnes marrying Graffan Waldrop.
I have been searching these Barnes for many months now in hopes of finding the maiden name of Susannah who married John Barnes. Susannah is shown on another document as Susannah Barnes, giving permission for her daughter Sally Barnes to marry Graffan Waldript in 1792. My cousin located this document at the Memphis Library. I had realized that with Susannah giving permission, that this would probably mean that John Barnes had died by 1792. Did John Barnes' widow Susannah married William Rivers secondly? If so, then why is she listed as Susannah Barnes when she died in October 1820 Greensville Co., VA?
Let me show you how confused this is. In the Greensville Co., VA records it shows that William Rivers married Susannah Richardson in 1789. That William Rivers gave permission for Sally Barnes Rivers to marry in 1792 and that he was her father.
Elizabeth Wager's will dated 1784 Sussex Co., VA notes Sally Barnes was the daughter of John Barnes and was left items from Wager's estate.
Then in a deed where Bennett Barnes and wife Susanna Simmons Whitehorn were selling lands in 1822 Greensville Co. VA, these lands are noted as those passed to Bennett Barnes by Sally Waldript. Bennett Barnes was the youngest son of John Barnes and Susannah.
John and Susannah Barnes were my third grgrandparents through their daughter Lizza who married Henry Mason 1816 Greensville Co. Do you by chance have another source document noting the marriage date of Susannah Barnes and William Rivers?

CAROLYN ANDERSON TO HOWARD H. WALDROP
Gary Hicks suggested I contact you regarding Sally Barnes who married Graffan Waldript (Griffin Waldrop). I have gone back to the original marriage note which shows Sally Barnes m. Graffan Waldrip. William Rivers, Father. Then to the Memphis Library which notes "1792 December 13 Graffan Waldript Sally Barnes d/o Susanna Barns, bond William Rivers. Howard, do you have any other source showing the marriage of Sally Barnes and Griffin Waldrop above and Sally's relationship to William Rivers?
I have been researching these Barnes for many months now and the above is really confusing to me. Sally Barnes is first mentioned in the Estate of
Elizabeth Wager 1792 Sussex Co. when Sally, daughter of John Barnes, is left from this estate. Then Susannah Barnes is noted as the mother of William Barnes in his will of 1804 Greensville Co. In the 1783 Greensville Census, Elizabeth Wager is noted as is John Barnes. Susannah Barnes' son Bennett Barnes married Susanna Simmons Whitehorn, widow of Philemon Whitehorn, 1815 Sussex Co. In 1822 Bennett Barnes sells lands in Greensville Co., left to him by Sally Waldript.
The other children I have for Susannah Barnes are: John Barnes Jr. who married Elizabeth Bass 1803 Greensville Co. and who raised by ggrandfather Thomas R. Mason born 1818 Greensville Co., following the death of his parents. A masonic document in Arkansas notes that Thomas R. Mason lost his parents as a small boy and was raised by his uncle in Greensville. Lizza Barnes married Henry Mason 1816 Greensville Co. Lizza was the sister of John Barnes. There was another brother by the name of Richard Barnes who married Polly Wray and died 1825 in Greensville Co. Also, a sister named Rebecca Barnes who married Hartwell Adams 1821 Greensville. 1827 Greensville Co. Bennett and wife Susanna along with Rebecca and husband Hartwell Adams sold lands left them by
Susannah Barnes. These lands were next to those of Lizza (Elizabeth) Mason and Crawley House.
Susannah Barnes died in Oct. 1820 Greensville Co. All of her living children were assisting in this estate. Sally Waldript is not mentioned and with Bennett selling lands left him by her in 1822, she must have died prior to Oct. 1820?
Howard, from 1792 until 1804 Susannah Barnes is not mentioned in Greensville Co. Then after receiving the estate and lands of her deceased son William Barnes in 1804, she did not pay property taxes on these lands until 1811. Was Susannah Barnes a sister of William Rivers Jr. or did they marry and then he died and she took back the Barnes surname? What I have for William Rivers is that he married Susannah Richardson in 1792. Was Susannah Barnes' maiden name Richardson? As you can see there are problems with the above. I so hope you will be able to help me in solving this mystery.

On Mon, 13 May 2002 Carolyn Anderson, CCA44@aol.com writes:
 Dear H.L.,
I'm writing you per the note from Harold Waldrop regarding Sally Barnes noted as Sally Barnes Rivers, daughter of Susannah Barnes and William Rivers when Sally married Graffan Waldript (Griffen Waldrop) 1792 Greensville Co.
As I asked of Harold and all of these messages listed below (smile)I'm hoping perhaps you may have a source document showing that Susannah Barnes married William Rivers? What I have is that Sally Barnes is listed as having William Rivers as her father in the Greensville Co. records. Then at the Memphis Library the marriage bond of Sally and Graffan is listed this way: 2-13-1793 Graffan Waldript married Sally Barnes daughter of Susanna Barnes. Surety William Rivers. I know that a William Rivers married Susannah Richardson 1792 in Greensville Co. Is this the same William Rivers? Is is possible that William Rivers was a brother to Susannah Barnes?
 H. L. would you please read through this long message. I next have Sally Waldript leaving lands to Bennett Barnes, her brother, in Greensville Co. prior to 1822 and probably prior to 1820 as she is not listed in her mother Susannah Barnes' estate in Oct. 1820.
If you can help me in clearing up this mystery I surely would appreciate your assistance.
 Sincerely,
 Carolyn Anderson

I have that Sally Barnes Rivers was daughter of William Rivers and Susanna Barnes. You have Graffan [Griffin, Grafton???] Waldrop's lineage as I have it.
The John Waldrop who also married Sally Barnes Rivers is a mystery. As far as I know, no one knows his ancestry. Sure would be interested if you have any clues for his father. I suspect [no proof] he is the John, Will probated March term 1795 Northampton Co., NC., son of Michael and brother to Graffan. Probably married his sister-in-law in 1803, after death of Graffon.

This could be Susanna Barnes [perhaps she married twice and her surname was Richardson???? I just do not know. Hope this helps you. H.L. Waldrop

This Joseph could be the father of Johna Waldrop and Jon Waldrop. At the time that Joseph wrote his will, they had been gone from Amelia Co. for 20 years. He may have had no idea of their fate.
