Notes
a. Note:   Obituary of Ephraim Q. Heard. "Ephraim Q. Heard It is my painful duty to report the death of brother E. Q. Heard, who died near Chadwick, Perry County, Ala on the 21st day of March 1885, after a lingering illness. He was born in Wilks county, Ga, 1811, and with his parents removed to this county in his early life. In 1834 he was married to Miss Eliza Kilgo He and his wife joined the Baptist church of Christ at Hephzibah in this county in 1842, and were baptized by Eld. John Dennis. Bro. Heard was the father of eleven children, and raised all to be grown except one that died in its infancy and ten of them became members of the Baptist church before his death.
His wife died five weeks before his death. Bro Heard lived an examplary life up to the day of his death. In his death the church lost one of its best members. He was always true and faithful to the cause of Christ. His house was a home for the minister. He loved the cause which he espoused. Often have I seen his flowing tears while listening to the preached word. In his old age, he enjoyed the religion of the Lord Jesus best. He proved the sincerity of his love to God by his walk and liberal contributions of his abundance. He was honest, truthful and upright in all of his dealings. While we realize our great loss in the church, the community has sustained a greater loss. He was a neighbor indeed, and was always ready to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, befriend the poor, the orphan, and the widow. But while we mourn our loss it is his eternal gain. Often did he pray that he might live the life of the righteous and die the death of the same.
It has been my pleasure to be Bro. Heard's pastor for eight years. Deep down in his heart in his last years, he heard and obeyed the voice of his soul's mystical Bride and groom, Come. Thus it is the source of sacred joy to his family, his relatives and friends, that he died in the full commendation of his old church in which he lived forty-two years. On Sunday evening, March 22nd, his body was conveyed to the family graveyard, attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and neighbors, where it was laid away to await the trump of God and the shout of the archangel."
