It extended from Liberty Canyon on the east to the edge of Westlake Village on the west, north to the Simi grant and south to the homestead territory bordering the Malibu Tapia grant. Later, under the U.S. Flag, the grant was filed under the ownership of Dona Maria Antonia Machado Del Reyes. Her heirs, Jose Reyes and Maria Altagracia Reyes de Vejar, in 1820, built a home of adobe close to a natural spring near Strawberry Peak. The bandit, Joaquin Murietta often hid out there in the spring never ran dry. In time, portions of the original grant were given to descendants or sold, until the last survivor to own the adobe was Jacinta Reyes. It still stands today along with the adobe barn, on a grass covered hill, the spring still running. The story begins in 1845 when a widow with 14 children, Maria Antonia Machado, purchased the original Reyes rancho, known as Rancho Los Virgenes, from her uncle Jose Maria Dominguez. Maria Machado's husband, Jose Jacinto Reyes, was the son of Juan Francisco Reyes who served on the famous Portola expedition. Maria and Jose Reyes' son Jose Paulino built the adobe home in approximately 1850 during the state's rancho period. Reyes ownership lasted into the next century. From 1916 to 1983 the property transferred to owners who shared a common interest in preserving the landmark adobe home located in the beautiful foothills beneath Ladyface Mountain. The Reyes home was one of the last watering holes between here and Santa Barbara from Los Angeles. The Reyes family was know to accommodate travelers' from the El Camino Real occasionally, including mission padres. Rumor has it that even "bad man" Jacquin Murietta stayed at the rancho. The Reyes' also hosted a regional rodeo that brought many guests from around the state to their homestead. The step grandfather of George Valdez, Juan Robert Chavez, was born in the Reyes Adobe house in November 1878. Mr. Valdez is the last known descendent of the Reyes family to have owned a portion of what was originally Rancho Las Virgenes. The Californio women loved refined items imported from New England and China such as silk shawls, blue dish ware and other items. Most homes had a mirror in which the people could admire their fine clothes [www.reyesadobe.org]. Built between 1790 and 1820 by Jacinto Reyes, the 1,700 square-foot house served as a working cattle ranch and a way station for travelers and Spanish missionaries working their way up and down the El Camino Real, the "royal road" that paralleled the future 101 Freeway."
