An American trapper, he crossed the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada with Pattie's party in 1828 and chose to remain at Los Angeles, where he became a Mexican citizen and operated a store. He married María Avelina Rendón y Cota at Mission San Gabriel on September 6, 1832 (SG Marriage 01858A) and appears as a Los Angeles resident in the 1836 Mexican census.
