  He had a commendable record in the Revolutionary War. He commanded a company of volunteers at Point Pleasant. In 1775 he was elected colonel of the Ninth Regiment that guarded the eastern shore. In 1777 he joined Washington's army and was at Brandywine and Germantown, where he was captured. He was confined on a prison ship and suffered great hardship until exchanged in 1781, when he joined Green in the Southern campaign.
