Note: N9276 Richmond Whig (Richmond, Virginia), 23 April 1841 (Friday) We lament to announce the death of our esteemed fellow citizens, Walter F. Jones, Esq. late Post Master at Norfork, who died on Wednesday evening, the 14th inst., of pulmonary consumption, in the 45th year of his age. To all who knew him his memory will ever be dear—for none who knew him who could fail to receive the most lasting impressions of his striking traits of character and disposition, formed as they were by the purest dictates of honor, the finest sentiments of morality and virtue, and the inspiration of the very spirit of benevolence and philanthropy. The subject of this notice was the only son of the late Merriwether Jones, of Richmond, a gentleman of eminent standing, who occupied a distinguished position as editor of the leading political journal in Virginia, in the stormy period of '98, and for sometime subsequent to the election of Mr. Jefferson. He was educated for the bar, but in imbibing the fine chivalrous feelings of his father, young Walter entered the Navy is a midshipman at an early period of his life, and continued in the service during and for some years after the war of 1812, being with the expedition under Commodore Decatur which terminated the war with Algiers. On leaving the Navy he commenced the practice of law in this Borough where he married a lovely and amiable lady, daughter of the late to Richard Taylor, Esq. (alas! that widowed heart, who shall now speak her anguish?) And continued to dwell among us beloved and cherished as one who knew not what it was to endure the breath of enmity or detraction.–Norfolk Herald.
