  Ruth H. Meriwether, 91, died following an extended illness, Thursday, October 26, 2006 at Knox Center for Long Term Care. Born in Payson, Utah, December 17, 1914, she was the daughter of Lloyd H. and Veda Dixon Hamren. Educated in California, she was a 1932 graduate of Huntington Beach Union High School. After graduating from Long Beach Junior College in 1934, Mrs. Meriwether worked as a stenographer and secretary for Douglas Aircraft Company during the early part of WWII. She later worked for Meriwether Investments, marrying the president of that company, James H. Meriwether in Eudora, Arkansas, June 30, 1945. Returning to California, Mrs. Meriwether enrolled in U.C.L.A. while raising her three children. At the age of 50 she earned a Bachelor of Art Degree in Art History. Her family remembers her as an avid reader who kept an extensive library of well loved and annotated books. She was also very active in political and community affairs, had a passion for Environmental Politics and was a lifetime, active member of the Sierra Club. For many years she was a member of a group of U.C.L.A. Alumni that met weekly to discuss books, art and culture.
  Mrs. Meriwether was predeceased by one brother Swegn Hamren, two sisters, Dorothy Hamren, Jane Ehrlich and one niece Leslie Rowley.
  She is survived by one son Hunter Meriwether of East Grand Rapids, Michigan; two daughters, Dorothy Meriwether and her partner Betty Thomas of Spruce Head, Jane Meriwether of Los Angeles, California; two grandchildren, Ruth Michels and her husband Richard of Forest Hills, Michigan, Judith Larson and her husband Lars of Williamsburg, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Charles Michels of Forest Hills, Michigan, MuCulloch Larson and Neils Larson both of Williamsburg, Virginia; and one nephew James Hamren and his wife Marijane of South Salem, New York.
