Born in Prince George County, Virginia
Moved as child to City Point, Virginia where he was taught by a governess and at the Zimmer School in City Point.
He was a messenger in the Confederate treasury and rose to be the assistant cashier. He was in Co. G, Department Battalion forces of local defense.
After the war he returned to Prince George County where in 1869 he was the court clerk. Married Susan "Sue" Travis Beckwith in October of 1876. After her death on 5 July 1877 he married Mary Love Bragg, daughter of Governor Bragg of North Carolina and one time senator in U.S. Senate. Two children
Eventually went to Petersburg where he became one of the leading attorneys in the state of Virginia.
