Note: N12724 Miss Susan Payne Smith, Obituary. Communicated. This Knoxville Register, Knoxville, Wednesday 7 Mar 1832; Vol. XVI, No. 814 Departed this life on the morning of 22 February, at the residence of her father, Miss Susan P. Smith, youngest daughter of Major Merrywether Smith of Roane county. The early and unexpected death of this amiable and interesting young lady, is deeply deplored by numerous relatives and friends; but the sorrow with this hope, that she lives in a happier clime; that she swells in the bosom of her heavenly father, where celestial visions break in constant raptures on her soul, whilst to the listening hearers she sings in strains "as sweet as angels use" the praises of her God. Called in the spring of life, to relinquish all earthly connexions and embark on the new and untried scenes of eternity, she lifted her heart and voice in penitential tears to the throne of divine mercy, for the favor and protection of her Lord, whose presence alone calms every fear-rolls back the clouds that shroud the tomb and brightly illumes the vale of death. Her prayer was heard, her faith and penitence acknowledged; the opening heavens unveiled to her faith a smiling Saviour, and joy and peace overflowed her heart. She said it is enough, and sweetly slept in his kind embrace. There are those who will cherish long, a fond remembrance of her many virtues. "Happy should they days are ended, All they mourning days below: Go, by angel guards attended, To the arms of Jesus, "go." E.F.S.
