The Last of Her Generation—Death and Burial of Mrs. Alice Davis of Prairieville Township
Mrs. Alice Davis, widow of J. Winn Davis, Sr. of Prairieville, die on the 10th inst., at the residence of her son, at Clarksville, whither she had gone on a visit two months previous, from her home at Prairieville. Deceased had been feeble for a number of years, and intended to remain in Clarksville a few weeks only. She took sick, however, and grew feebler and feebler, until on the 10th inst., at 7 o'clock P.M., surrounded by her children and relatives, she fell asleep in Jesus, her death being painless and exceedingly calm – literally a sleep.
Deceased was born in Virginia in November, 1803 (sic), and was in her 76th year at the time of her death. Herself and husband were among the first families that migrated to this state from the Old Dominion, having settled in this county 40 years ago.
At the time of the death of J. Winn Davis, Sr. (consort of deceased) he was the patriarch of the Episcopal church in northeast Missouri. The bricks in St. John's Episcopal church at Prairieville were burnt by him and donated to the parish.
On Thursday, the 12th inst., the remains of deceased were conveyed to St. John's church in Prairieville, where the burial service of the Episcopal dead was said and a funeral sermon preached by the rector, Rev. B. F. Matran. The text chosen for this occasion was the 15th verse of the 116th Psalm: 'Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.' A large concourse of relative and friends were present, the church being crowded.
Deceased leaves five children - Mrs. Wm. Merriwether, J. Winn Davis, Jr., Dr. Davis Walker Davis and Tom Davis, all residents of this county except the latter, who lives in St. Joe.
