  Our readers will learn with sadness of the death of Hon. George D. Merriwether, which occurred at his residence in Lincoln Co., on last Sunday night (30 Aug 1874). His illness was pneumonia, and of about two weeks duration. A gentleman of culture and attractive social qualities, of strict probity and kindness of heart, his friends were warm and many; and, dying in the prime of his life, his death brings sadness to many hearts. Mr. Merriwether was in his forty-eighth year. He was buried with Masonic honors on Tuesday in the Episcopal graveyard at Prairieville.

  At a regular meeting of the Auburn Grange number 1550 of the Patrons of Husbandry held Sept. 26, 1874, the following resolutions of respect to our late brother, George D. Meriwether, were unanimously passed.
  Whereas, it has pleased the all-wise giver of all mortal and eternal life to remove from our fellowship on earth, our faithful and beloved brother, George D. Meriwether, who departed this life August 30, 1874, , therefore, be it
  Resolved, that in the sad and premature death of our brother the fraternity has lost a zealous and influential advocate, our grange a useful and honored officer and member, his family a kind and indulgent husband, his county a highly respected and useful citizen, and society one of its brightest ornaments.
  Resolved, that in acknowledging the excellence of him who is gone, and honoring his memory, we tender to his family and friends in their sorrow, our health heartfelt sympathy
  Resolved, that the upright and honorable character of our departed brother is an example worthy of our imitation, and we will cherish his memory and strive to emulate the virtues that adorned his exemplary life.
  Resolved, that as a token of respect for the virtues of our departed brother, our grange be draped in mourning for thirty days.
  Resolved, that a copy of these proceedings be sent to the family of the deceased, and a copy be published in the Troy Herald.
