  Mortuary Notice
 Death of Major Thomas M. Cowles—This gentleman, one of the oldest, and from his prudence and sagacity, most valuable citizens of Montgomery, Alabama, died at his residence on Friday evening last, after a long and distressing illness.
  Time is the most precious and yet the most brittle jewel we have. It is wj=hat every man bids largely for, when he wants it, but squanders it away when he gets it.

  Died at his residence in the city of Macon (sic?), on the 20th of March, 1857, after a long and trying sickness, an affection of the chest, Maj. Thos. Merriwether Cowles, in the 63d year of his age.
