  He enlisted as a private in 44th Alabama Regiment, Infantry. He was soon appointed an assistant surgeon on 17 Jul 1862. Confederate records indicate he died of disease (believed to be typhoid fever) either on 23 Jul 1862 in Falling Creek, Virginia, or 15 Aug 1862 in Richmond, Virginia.
