Note: N848 Francis Thornton Meriwether Salt River Journal ( Bowling Green, MO), 7 March 1840 DIED—At the residence of his father, on Thursday the 20th of January last, after a painful illness of three weeks, which he bore with calm resignation,—Francis Merriwether, son of Walker G. Merriwether of this county. The subject of the above notice, was a young man much admired by all who knew him. Amiable in his disposition, tender in his affections—he was endeared to a large circle of relatives and friends—just entering manhood with bright prospects of future happiness and prosperity, he was snatched away in the springtide of life by the resistless grasp of death.—When we see the aged and infirm fall off and moulder into dust, we view it as a law of nature; but when the young and active are hurried away in the bloom of life by the cold and icy hand of death; "tis then, we almost murmur at him who calls us home—But while we mingle our sympathies with those of his bereaved relatives and friends; we should console ourselves with the reflection that our loss is his gain; and altho' his body now lies cold and motionless as the clay which encircles it, his spirit has taken its flight to the god that made it; there to obtain the reward due to the virtuous.
