a. Note:   N15752 Richmond Enquirer (Richmond, Virginia), 10 May 1859
Died, at Dr. Nowlin's, in Salem, Roanoke county, Va., on the 2nd of March, after a few days illness of pneumonia, Alfred S. Meriwether, eldest son of Judge Joseph M. Meriwether, of Mount Elba, Bradley county, Arkansas and grandson of Major David Shields, deceased, of Cumberland county, Va., aged 19 years.
By this sudden and afflictive dispensation we are forcibly reminded that "death loves a shining mark." Alfred possessed, in an eminent degree, those traits of character which entitled him to be called a good and promising youth and was loved by all his fellow students and associates, and died resigned to the will of Providence, believing that he would enter a happy eternity. It will be a solace to his distant parent and relatives to know that he was cared for by the professors and students of Roanoke College, and had the skill and attention of kind physicians during his illness. His remains were taken to Dr. J. B. Anderson's of Amelia county, and interred.
