Note: N4016 State (Columbia, SC), 11 December 1915 Gallant Veteran Has Passed Away Gilliam Smith Meriwether Dead at Sixty-nine Gilliam Smith Meriwether died at his residence, 1718, Blanding street, at 5:30 yesterday afternoon in his 69th year. He had been in bad health for about two years and the end was not unexpected although he was confined to his bed only a little over a week. He gradually grew worse and finally gave up the fight. He is survived by his wife, four children and one grandchild. The children are: Mrs. I.G. Cooper, Waller B. Meriwether, Traynham M. Meriwether and Gilliam S. Meriwether, Jr., and his wife, Mrs. Anna E. Meriwether. He also leaves one brother, Waller B. Meriwether of Birmingham, and one sister, Mrs. W.R. Smith of Chappells. Gilliam Smith Meriwether was born in Newberry county, April 5, 1846, and was married to Miss Anna E. Starnes, February 11, 1875. He was in business for a number of years in Greenwood and moved to Columbia in 1900. He was a Confederate veteran, having enlisted at the beginning of the struggle between the North and South in Company F, Palmetto battalion, light artillery. He attended the old Arsenal Military academy that formerly stood where the Governor's mansion now stands. Later, he attended the Citadel in Charleston and was at that academy when the war broke out. The funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the residence, 1718 Blanding street. The services will be conducted by the Rev. B.R. Turnipseed, pastor of Main Street Methodist Church.

Note: N4017 State (Columbia, SC), 12 December 1915 Funeral of Late Gilliam Smith Meriwether Arranged Funeral services of Gilliam Smith Meriwether will be held at the residence, 1718 Blanding street, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. The interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. The late Mr. Meriwether, a gallant Confederate veteran, died Friday. He had been ill for some time, but had been confined to his bed only about one week. Pallbearers for the funeral this afternoon will be: E. Orr, Rufus M.Clegg, W.M. Pollard, J.M. Fetner, C.F. Phifer and R.M. McElhaney.
