a. Note:   N4559 William David Meriwether and his brother-in-law, John Gatewood Ham, joined Capt. R. L. Y. Long's Company of Cavalry  (known as Plillips Legion,  Company D) at Staunton, Virginia, in February 1863 and served under Gen. J. E. B. Stuart until his death and  then under Gen. Wade Hampton until Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox on 9 April 1865.  My source for this information is a copy of a letter to my grandfather from his Uncle William David Meriwether dated 2 November 1908.
